Will the new child protection thing affect club runs?

Postby Rob T on Sun Sep 13, 2009 9:11 pm

Just wondering, but someone suggested that it might mean that anyone who rides with people under 18 would need to be CRB checked (or whatever it's called).

How would this affect club runs?

More to the point is there any way of protecting older members from having their legs ripped off by a 16 year old.

I haven't seen anything that would mean amending the club's existing policy on Child Protection, but maybe the committee ought to double check. We were obliged to fall in line with national policy a few years back, and our version (which can be viewed on this website) met the guidelines set out by British Cycling, Cycling Time Trials et al. We have two Welfare Officers listed in the magazine should the need arise to follow up complaints. They have both been CRB checked, as I have as a Senior BC Commissaire.
The question of vulnerability of children on club runs was adequately dealt with at committee level, and is covered by the following: "Well behaved children under 16 are welcome on club runs provided they are accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult. Children aged 16 and 17 may ride with parental approval and will otherwise be treated as adults."
On the racing scene parental consent must be in writing.
I don't think there is any point in making additional rules. It would be helpful if all club members familiarised themselves with the Protection Policy we have in place. It can be found before you log on to the Forum.
I hope that helps assure members.

Regard
Pete :) :D

No - that rebellious young hoodlum Roly Crayford still turns up whenever he feels like
The car in front is a Toyota. The car behind is inevitably some git in a BMW doing their best to knock you off your bike...
