Free Anti-Virus for your computer

Postby Phill on Thu Oct 22, 2009 7:04 am

At last, Microsoft has faced up to the responsibility of providing security for its operating systems. Microsoft have released an Antivirus / Malware security tool called MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) and its free. They have not been at all forthcoming with the details as apparently they are upsetting the likes of Norton and Mcafee who make a lot of money from their version of the programs.

Here it is. There is the usual validation that your software is genuine and then it installs.

Thanks Phill,

Is it just for Windows 7 or for XP and Visata as well?

I believe that having more than one anti virus programme can sometimes cause problems - is this one good enough on its own?

Just found this on the MSE web site

Supported Operating Systems: Genuine Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3); Windows Vista (Gold, Service Pack 1, or Service Pack 2); Windows 7

Whilst its only recently been packaged as MSE its actually been around for a while in various forms and so is quite mature. For most users this will be a more than adequate Anti-Virus and Malware product. If you have a subscription Anti-virus I'd suggest continuing until the subscription runs out but I don't see anypoint in paying for Antivirus products anymore. Compared to other free AV products only time will tell but having the full weight of Microsoft behind this product should insure it won't be a bad choice.

sounds interesting, does this mean that they have done away with Windows Defender and rolled it into this package?

I have just read through the license agreement and this is really only for home use.

If your a business you can get away with running in a SOHO environment.

I want to get a comment in before John Bosley but can't think of anything suitable. Should I get a red card for this :D
