Barming footbridge

Barming footbridge

Postby ronlee on Fri Oct 24, 2008 11:01 am

This useful river crossing for cyclists and walkers was closed on 22nd Sepember for 3 weeks.

Yesterday - 23rd October - I went down St Helens Lane on the way home from a ride and it's still closed. Back up the hill and fight the 5 o'clock traffic over Farleigh bridge........

Just phoned KCC who say work was delayed (I had already guessed that) and they hope it will be reopened by the middle of next week. Bad weather may cause further delay as the work is painting.

Ron
It's years since I used to drive across that old wooden structure. It's been closed to motor vehicles for many years and I hadn't appreciated it was actually open to walkers and cyclists these days. Do you know what plans, if any, there are to open up to motor vehicles again. In the mean time, I must ride down there and see it again. Thanks for bringing the subject up.

Hopefully it will never reopen to vehicles. It was used as a rat run, and being so narrow there are no passing places. Going against the prevailing flow of traffic was a nightmare - made East Farleigh bridge seem like a dual carriageway.

I suspect that if any attempt is made the residents would not be too keen.
